Wet Car Carpet: Is It a Spill or a Leak?
A one-time spill is a DIY dry-out. If it gets wet again, you have a leak, and that has to be fixed before anything else.
- Typical cost
- $0 to $50 DIY if you own a wet/dry vac, $100 to $300 for a pro dry-out, $300 to $600 or more if the carpet has to come out, leak repairs vary
- Time
- 1 to 2 days to dry
- DIY difficulty
- Easy to medium
Wet carpet in a car is never just wet carpet, and here’s how to tell a spill from a leak.
A spill dries and stays dry. A leak keeps coming back. The padding under the carpet holds water like a sponge, so a damp patch on top is often a much bigger wet area underneath. Work out which one you have before you dry anything.
Spill or leak?
- One wet spot where you know something spilled: a spill. It stays dry once you dry it.
- Wet after rain or a car wash: a door seal, sunroof drain, windshield seal or trunk seal.
- Wet under the dash, clear water, after running the AC: a clogged AC drain.
Fix it yourself, or pay a pro?
Fix it yourself when it’s a spill, or a leak you can find.
- Pull the floor mats.
- Pull out as much water as you can with a wet/dry vacuum.
- If the carpet is soaked, lift it. The padding underneath is what holds the water.
- Run fans or a dehumidifier with the doors open. You want it dry in 24 to 48 hours, or mold starts.
- Find the source before you close everything back up.
For a cigarette burn, trim the burned fibers with small scissors. It usually blends in. A big burn needs a carpet patch. For stains, the spill guide covers which cleaner to use.
Pay a pro when it’s soaked under the carpet, it keeps coming back, or you can’t find the leak. A pro dry-out and detail usually runs $100 to $300, and more if the carpet has to come out. A new door or window seal is another $100 to $300 per door at a shop, and more on some vehicles.
What I’d buy
Wet/dry shop vacuum
$80 to $165The fastest way to pull water out of carpet and padding.
Moisture absorber or small dehumidifier
$8 to $30Keeps pulling moisture while the car is closed up.
Will it get worse if I wait?
Yes, and quickly. Mold can start in 24 to 48 hours, and the smell that goes with it is one of the hardest to remove. Seat sensors and wiring often run under the carpet too, so a soaked floor can turn into an electrical problem. Dry it now.
Keep it from happening again
Clear the sunroof and AC drains once a year, and check the door seals for cracks. In wet weather, custom-fit floor liners hold the water so it never reaches the carpet.
